Despite its high intelligence, is an often-willed dog for training. However, if socializing and training begins early enough, in the right environment and with the right amount of training, these dogs can be a real pleasure to be around. The key to successfully training Ridgeback is to use positive reinforcement and show the dog lots of patience and understanding during a training session. It would be a mistake to try to rush with the young Ridgeback, but rather take the time to gently guide them into learning how to act.
Making their training as diverse and fun as possible helps keep the Ridgeback focused, and the more they enjoy the individual attention they receive, the better they respond to something. It does not respond well to any kind of harsh correction that does not produce any kind of good results and may even hurt the confidence. Providing their training is consistent throughout their lives, and these dogs will always do their best to please their owner.
Ridgeback puppies are incredibly cute and they are also very noisy which means playing can be a little overwhelming at times. New owners need to start with what they mean by going, which means setting rules and limits directly from the word go in order for puppies to understand the type of acceptable and unacceptable behavior. All dogs should study their place in the "pack" which is the alpha dog at home, keeping in mind that the Ridgeback puppy always tests the limits from time to time just for fun, and see how much they can get away with.
